About This Guide

This LGBTQ+ Libguide has been created to provide resources for students and faculty alike who are part of the community or are curious to learn more. The purpose of this libguide is to provide resources accessible through Clark College's library and within the community.

Glossary/Vocabulary Guide

Agender- someone who does not align with any gender or who does not experience gender.

Allosexual- someone who experiences sexual attraction to others.

Aromantic- a romantic orientation characterized by not feeling romantic attraction or desire for romance.

Asexual- describes a person who experiences little or no sexual attraction to others. Asexual people may still choose to engage in sexual activity.

Bisexual- a person whose primary romantic or sexual attraction is toward people of the same and other genders, or towards people regardless of gender.

Cisgender- when you identify with the gender you were assigned at birth.

Cisnormative- a system of attitudes, biases, and discrimination in favor of cisgender people that marginalizes trans people and treats their needs and identities as less important than those of cisgender people, who are considered to exist within social normalcy.

Demisexual- a sexual orientation in which someone feels sexual attraction only to people with whom they have an emotional bond.

Gay- a sexual and affectional orientation toward people of the same gender.

Gender- a social construct used to classify a person as a man, woman or some other identity. Fundamentally different from the sex assigned at birth.

Gender Binary- the inaccurate view that only two, totally distinct, opposite, and static gender identities and corresponding expressions exist.

Genderfluid- a person whose gender identification and presentation shifts, whether within or outside of societal, gender-based expectations. Being fluid in motion between two or more genders.

Gender Identity- a person's inner sense of being trans, genderqueer, woman, man, or some other identity which may or may not correspond to the sex one is assigned at birth.

Gray-Ace/Graysexual- this is considered the gray area between asexuality and allosexuality, in which a person may only experience sexual attraction on occasion. 

Intersex- an umbrella term to describe a wide range of natural body variations that do not fit neatly into conventional definitions of male or female. Intersex variations may include, but are not limited to, variations in chromosome composition, hormone concentrations, and external and internal characteristics.

Lesbian- usually someone who identifies as a woman whose primary sexual and affectional orientation is toward people of the same gender.

Non-binary- describes a person whose gender identity falls outside of the traditional gender binary structure of male/female. 

Pansexual- a term used to describe people who have romantic, sexual, or affectional attraction for people of all genders and sexes.

Polysexual- people who have romantic, sexual or affectional desire for more than one gender.

Queer- an umbrella term used to describe gender/sexual/romantic orientations that fall outside of societal norms. Historically the term "queer" has been used as a slur but it has been reclaimed by many as a term of empowerment.

Transgender- Describes a person whose gender identity and sex assigned at birth do not correspond based on traditional expectations. Transgender can also include people with gender identities outside of the male/female gender binary structure.

Two-Spirit- an umbrella term encompassing sexuality and gender in Indigenous Native American communities.
